About This Service

There is a difference between mulch installed correctly and mulch dumped in a bed. Proper mulch installation starts with bed preparation — edge definition, weed removal, and clearing any built-up organic material from previous years that has turned hydrophobic and is blocking drainage to plant roots. Then the right depth: two to three inches for most applications, never piled against tree trunks or crowns where it traps moisture and causes rot. We use shredded hardwood and cedar mulch from suppliers we know, applied at the depth that provides real weed suppression and moisture retention. Steel edging is installed before mulching where beds do not have a clean edge, giving the finished job a defined look that holds through the season without constant maintenance. The practical benefits of correctly installed mulch compound over time: weed pressure reduction, moisture retention during Wisconsin dry spells, soil temperature moderation through freeze-thaw cycles, and gradual organic matter return as the mulch breaks down. We keep records of past jobs and will reach out when your beds are due for a refresh.

    Bed assessment

    We evaluate existing bed conditions, measure total square footage, and determine how much material and what preparation is needed.

    Preparation

    Edges cleaned, weeds removed, old matted mulch broken up or removed where it is blocking drainage or has built up too deep.

  3. 03

    Installation

    Mulch applied at the correct depth throughout — two to three inches, cleared from crowns and trunks, edges finished cleanly.

  4. 04

    Cleanup

    All material off the turf and hard surfaces. Beds left with defined edges and a clean finish.

How much mulch do I need for my beds?
Two to three inches of mulch is the standard target depth. For a 100 square foot bed, that is roughly one cubic yard of material. We calculate this during the estimate and include material and installation in one price — no surprises.
Should I remove old mulch before adding new?
Not always. If existing mulch is less than an inch deep and in good condition, adding on top is appropriate. If it is matted, hydrophobic, or has built up to more than four inches in areas, we remove the old material first to prevent drainage and crown rot issues. We assess this during the estimate.
What kind of mulch does Little Tree use?
We use shredded hardwood and cedar mulch from suppliers we have worked with for years. We do not use dyed mulch — the coloring agents fade quickly and the base material is typically lower quality. Natural hardwood and cedar provide better weed suppression and soil benefit as they break down.
How often should mulch be refreshed?
In most Wisconsin landscapes, mulch should be refreshed every one to two years. Over time it compacts and breaks down, losing its effectiveness as a weed barrier and moisture retainer. We keep records of past jobs and will reach out when your beds are due.
